No play time on Sundays is one of the paintings from We all Cast shadows. This body of work is inspired by fishing communities and times of hardship and community and is based on the book In the heart of the sea by Nathaniel Philbrick.
In the Summer I spent some time up in the very North of Scotland in Gardenstown – a tiny fishing village that clings to the side of the very steep land. The church sits at the very top, a comforting and watchful eye over the community and village but a very steep climb from the fishing houses at the harbour. Older folks tell me that church was not just a one time on a Sunday event – most (if not all) children and families attended church if not twice then three times a day. So most of the day walking, singing and praying – certainly no time for playing!
